The origins of Amsterdam date back to about 1275, when the city was granted city rights, marked by the construction of Dam in the Amstel River. This was a crucial moment for Amsterdam to grow into a trading center. During the Middle Ages, the city flourished as a trading center, and in the Dutch Golden Age of the 17th century, it became the richest city in the Western world. The iconic canals from this period attract millions of visitors each year.

In the 19th and 20th centuries, Amsterdam continued to expand. The industrial revolution brought modernization, and the city played a significant role during World War II. After the war there was a cultural liberation, symbolic of the 1960s and 1970s, making Amsterdam a symbol of tolerance and diversity.

Today, Amsterdam is known for its high quality of life, cultural heritage and as a major player on the world stage. Its artistic legacy lives on in world-class museums such as the Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh Museum.

The 750th anniversary in 2025 will be celebrated with a year of events highlighting the city's historic journey and contemporary cultural, artistic and social achievements. Planned events include historic reconstructions, exhibitions, public art installations and festivals that reflect the city's diverse and inclusive spirit.

"In 2025, we celebrate not only Amsterdam's rich history but also its present and future as a beacon of culture, freedom and innovation. We invite the world to celebrate with us," said Deputy Mayor Touria Meliani (in charge of cultural affairs).

As Amsterdam prepares for this monumental year, the city continues to exemplify the enduring appeal of its canals, its resilience in the face of challenges and its eternal commitment to cultural richness and innovation. The 750th anniversary promises to be a fitting tribute to Amsterdam's past, present and future, showcasing the unique spirit of a city that constantly reinvents itself but stays true to its roots.
