The department store, completed in 2016, has been vacant since December 2019 after Canada's Hudson's Bay left the Netherlands with its tail between its legs. "When we heard that Hudson's Bay was leaving, we immediately looked at whether those properties were something for us," Ingo Uytdehaage told Het Parool. "Our challenge is that we are growing fast and hiring a lot of people even in this coronacrisis," said Adyen's chief financial officer.

"We want to get to a place where we are visible. We started as a small Amsterdam company and have grown rapidly in recent years. That includes showing who you are."

Architectural firm Tank
Adyen has asked original architect Rijnboutt and interior design firm Tank to take care of the building. The payments company will move into the massive building with 1,000 staff this fall.

Pop-up store
The first floor of the complex will remain zoned as retail space. The idea is to set up a pop-up store where every few months a different customer of Adyen will get the key. The intention is to show what Adyen can do for retailers and consumers. In addition, the fintech company plans to use the space for meetings and events for customers and staff. In the new plans, restaurant Ron Gastrobar Indonesia Downtown by well-known hospitality entrepreneur Ron Blaauw will not return.

Private subway entrance
The new headquarters will have its own subway entrance. During the construction of the North/South Line, the entrance was already prepared. It is currently being broken through. Adyen will continue to operate the public bicycle basement under the Grote Vleeshal.
