Keti Koti betekent ‘Verbroken Ketenen’ in het Surinaams en staat voor de afschaffing van de slavernij in het land op 1 juli 1863. Sindsdien staan we ieder jaar op deze datum samen stil bij het verleden en kijken we vooruit naar een vrije toekomst waarin gelijkheid en verbondenheid centraal staan.
Vanaf 11.00 uur loopt er een optocht van het Waterlooplein richting het Oosterpark in traditionele Surinaamse kleding en volgt er van 13.00 tot 14.30 uur een herdenkingsmoment bij het slavernij monument in het park. Hierna start om 15.00 het festival en wordt de vrijheid uitbundig gevierd met stands met lekker eten, drinken en diverse podia met live muziek en dansoptredens.
